Bonded Vestige

AetherBlade

Weapon — Bonded Vestige (any sword: longsword, shortsword, rapier, greatsword)

Not manufactured — forged. Steel infused with Essa at the moment of casting. It never stops moving.

An AetherBlade is created in a single act of Essa metallurgy — superheated steel infused with a concentrated Essa vial at the moment of casting. The tier used in the forge permanently determines the blade's power ceiling. Look close enough and you can see it moving: the Essa flows through the grain of the steel in slow, continuous patterns. In low light it's almost imperceptible. In full dark it's unmistakable — the steel breathes. Approximately 1 in 100,000 people carry a resonance signature that can bond with an AetherBlade. You can't train into it. You either carry the right frequency or you don't.

In the World

The forge process cannot be replicated by standard Machinist Techniques. The knowledge is pre-Collapse. The Citadel of the Still holds fragments of it. The Church of Flame has the rest and doesn't share. Covenant practitioners are defined by the discovery — they found their blade, or their blade found them. AetherBlades are not licensed in Imperial territory. No standard legal standing. Officially classified under "Unregistered Natural Channeling" — same category as Rawcasters. The blades predate the Empire. The Empire knows this and doesn't say it out loud.

Key Property: Force Edge

The blade deals bonus force damage on every hit equal to its Blade Grade. Does not require a vial. Always active for compatible attuned wielders.

Properties

Essa Resonance
The blade glows at all times (dim light, 5 ft). Color is fixed once the bond reaches Established stage. The glow cannot be suppressed — Signal Dampener Modules have no effect. The blade announces its practitioner to anyone who knows what to look for.
Incompatible Attunement
Non-compatible creatures who attune find the blade inert to Essa properties. However, Essa-forged metallurgy is categorically superior to standard manufacture. To any non-compatible wielder, an AetherBlade functions as a mundane +1 weapon — no force damage, no Internal Reserve, no Resonance Sense.
Internal Reserve (Covenant Only)
The blade generates EP internally without consuming a vial. Refreshes on Short Rest. Internal Reserve EP can only power T1-level Techniques (base effects, no enhancements). Enhanced Techniques still require standard vials. EP amount by Blade Grade: Kindled 2, Attuned 3, Resonant 4, Coherent 5, Sovereign 6.
Resonance Sense (Covenant Only)
While holding the blade, you always know the direction and approximate distance of any active Essa signature within 60 ft. You cannot be surprised while holding the blade.
Cannot Be Salvaged
AetherBlades are Bonded Vestiges, not Engineered Vestiges. Cannot be Stripped, Copied, or Broken Down. Cannot be Severed by C5 Sever (the Essa is structural, not in a hardware node). The Empire Suppression Grid reads it as a biological signature.
Bond Instability (Early Stage)
During the Early bond stage, each time the practitioner makes an attack with the blade, roll a d6. On a 1, the blade discharges uncontrollably — the attacker takes 1d8 force damage and the attack misses. Instability ends when the bond advances to Developing.

Bond Stages

EarlyBond DC − 4Instability Risk
First weeks of attunement. Roll d6 on each attack — on a 1 the attack misses and you take 1d8 force.
DevelopingBond DC − 2
Months of regular use.
EstablishedBond DC
Full bond. Normal operation. Glow color becomes fixed.
DeepBond DC + 2
Long-term bond. Rare. The blade and practitioner read as one signature.

Empire Context

AetherBlades have no legal standing in Imperial territory. Officially classified as "Unregistered Natural Channeling." Empire response by glow color — Blue or White: monitor, do not engage without authorization. Red, Green, or Unknown: detain for questioning, blade confiscated. Black blade: immediate containment, Legate notification, no exceptions. The Church of Flame disputes the Empire's classification authority — the blades predate the Empire. The Empire knows this and doesn't say it out loud.
